What is a study permit?

The study permit is a document Canadian Government Issue that allows foreign nationals to study at designated learning institutions (DLI) in Canada.
While studying in Canada under a study permit you must:
- always be enrolled at a DLI
- make progress towards completing your program
- respect any conditions listed on your study permit
- stop studying if you no longer meet the requirements and
- leave Canada when your permit expires

Depending on your case, there may be conditions on your study permit such as:
- the level of studies you can attend
- if you are allowed to work in Canada
- if you can’t travel within Canada
- the date you must stop studying

How long can you stay in Canada with a study permit?

A study permit is usually valid for the length of your study program, plus an extra 90 days. This extra time lets you prepare to leave Canada or apply to extend your stay.
- If you can’t finish your courses before the date on your permit, you must apply to extend your stay as a student.
- If you finish your studies early, your permit will stop being valid 90 days after you complete your studies (no matter what day is printed on the study permit).

You have completed your studies either

- on the date you get the first notification from your school (such as an email, letter, transcript, etc.) or
- when you get your degree, diploma or certificate.
You must provide proof of the date you got one of these.

Tution Fee

Even as the tuition fee can vary for every college and university, on an average the annual fee ranges between 14000-16000 Canadian dollars approximately. There is a separate visa office fee also that has to be paid by the student for getting the study visa for Canada once he/she meets the educational qualifications and other requirements of a particular selected course and gets letter of confirmation from the institute. The semester and annual fee of the university/college has to be paid in advance and it is refundable with a nominal deduction in case of non-issuance of visa.

Part Time Jobs

The students are permitted to work along with the studies on a part-time basis. Students are allowed to work 20 hours off-campus every week and can earn around CAD 12-16 per hour on an average. The average cost of living is CAD 10,000 annually.

The all new SDS Program: Student Direct Stream (SDS) has been officially announced on 8th of June 2018 in some countries including India.  Most SPP colleges had implemented the SDS program requirements already, which impacted their overall student numbers from India. The key change that will impact the overall numbers is increasing the IELTS band score from 5.5 each skill to 6.0 each skill for the post-secondary diploma programs. What is Student Direct Stream (SDS) Program

Some international students can get their study permits faster by using the Student Direct Stream. If your application is complete, it can be started reviewing by immigration officer right away.

If your application meets the regular study permit criteria but not the Student Direct Stream criteria, it will be reviewed as a regular study permit but you won’t get faster processing.

The Student Direct Stream (SDS) Program is a program that will speed up the processing for the full-time studies attending universities and colleges in Canada for students of the above-said countries. The SDS Program is supported by Scotia bank, a leading Canadian financial institution. Scotia bank will provide eligible students with the opportunity to purchase a Guaranteed Investment Certificate (GIC), which will satisfy the financial statement requirements of the SDS program.

SDS Program Requirements

Students applying for a program under SDS must meet the following eligibility criteria:
1. Admission to a full-time program in a publicly-funded post-secondary institution such as universities, colleges, institutes or CEGEP;
2. An IELTS score with a minimum band of 6 for each ability (Listening, Reading, Writing and Speaking) taken within past two years;
3. Purchase of a special Guaranteed Investment Certificate (GIC) from Scotia bank of CAD$10,000 to cover living expenses for the first year of stay in Canada;
4. Proof of payment of the tuition fee for one (1) year; AND
5. Upfront medical examination at least one week before submission of the application.

Singapore student visa

In Singapore, every visa is referred to as a "pass". So it is:

'Student pass'

It is no different from Student visa.

For a short course that can be completed in 30 days or the validity of the entry stamp you received on the checkpoint (whichever is less), you do not need a student pass.

Singapore student pass application:

After receiving the offer letter from the desired institute for particular course, students need to apply for student pass to enter Singapore. Institutes in Singapore will file the Singapore student pass for Indian application on behalf of the student to Singapore immigration and check point authority (ICA). Singapore student pass application Fee varies from institute to institute. Normally it will take 2 - 3 weeks to get the Singapore student visa pass.

 

Proof of financial sources:

As per the Singapore student visa rules, candidate has to show funds which must be minimum 1 day old from date of visa application. If the funds are as fixed deposit then, bank must issue a letter confirming the availability of same. Bank letter must be dated less than 30 days from the date of visa application

Application Procedure

US offers student visa (F1) for duration of 3-5 years. Post the completion of MS (Masters of Science), a student gets Optional Practical Training (OPT) under which the student is allowed to work full time for up to 29 months. This allows the student to work while on study visa. However, a student can apply for H1B visa (work visa) during or after the completion of OPT, and subsequently a student can apply for Green Card (legal permanent residency).

Professionals having 7-8 years of work experience after completion of graduation can also apply under the student visa. The Professionals can apply for MBA, PhD and all other Masters programs under the study visa category and subsequently get OPT for up to 29 months. Further, during or after the completion of OPT, Professionals can also qualify for H1B visa and subsequently they can qualify for Green Card.

STUDY VISA - UNITED KINGDOM

UK Study Visa

For studying in the UK, a student requires a study visa that has been duly approved by the immigration authorities.

There are two types of visas that a student can apply:
There is a Tier 4 (General) student visa and the Tier 4 (Child) student visa that can be acquired to study in tier 4 licensed sponsor institutes in the UK. For those wishing to study in the UK for a short period, there is a short-term study visa that one can apply for.

Tuition Fees

The current fee for the Tier 4 (General) student visa is £328 (~US$400), with an additional £328 fee per person for any dependents. You’ll also need to pay a healthcare surcharge of £150 per year (~US$180) in order to access the National Health Service (NHS) during your stay.

The Short Term Study Visa costs £89 (~US$110) for the six month option and £170 (~US$210) for the 11 month visa.
